Stories of Empowerment

Indian Fixed Income Market

Runamoni Deka, a small farmer from Morigaon, Assam, took a loan to purchase three cows. Unfortunately, one passed away and another took ill, rendering her helpless. Wiser after Mein Pragati, Runamoni, now invests in livestock insurance so that her farming activities withstand uncertainties.

Armed with their budget diary, good money management practices, and a renewed sense of confidence, Manalisha SHG today profitably sells lady fingers and chillies in the local market. The group is also considering hybrid and seasonal crops at their greehouse to sustain healthy cash inflows all year round.

Tara invested her late husband’s death benefit in a small business - producing shopping bags and puffed rice for sale in the local market. With her income, she now sends her children to school. An inspiration to her SHG, Tara’s fellow members have also started producing shopping bags.

My husband is the best example of the benefits of maintaining the Mein Pragati Budget Diary. When I assessed our household expenses after two months, we realized that my husband’s gutka addiction cost us nearly Rs.10,000 annually. Since then, he has given up tobacco for cheaper mouth fresheners.

Pushpa Kanwar Sikar, Rajasthan

In our village, women’s inputs were hardly ever taken for financial decisions. But the CRISIL Mitras helped us change that.

I lost money in a chit fund. But now, I understand that I should check the credibility of a plan/policy/scheme before making an investment.

A few words of encouragement from a CRISIL Mitra and new found financial awareness saw a confident and resourceful Suranjana emerging... she approached an MFI for credit with which she could begin packaging tea for sale. Today, she sells about 30 kg per month, has become a direct seller of various products for a local shopping mart, and has also engaged her husband in her small businesses.

The CRISIL Mitras introduced many families to the Jan Dhan schemes; the families saved to purchase cattle & increased income selling milk, and related products.

Murari Lal Gurjar Rajasthan

I increased my household income by more than 50% after Mein Pragati Financial Capability sessions.

Fatema Begum Assam

Rural folk much like their urban counterparts, aspire to live comfortably and provide for their families. What often stands in the way of these aspirations is an inherent lack of awareness and access to financial linkages. It is this divide that Mein Pragati strives to bridge.

Mein Pragati short film Success stories

Eventhough the village women are not that educated, they are now aware of the bank and ATM procedures
