How ready is India for the next wave in auto manufacturing?
India’s automobile industry is at crossroads. An under-penetrated market for most automotive segments is the open horizon. But a host of structural and regulatory changes will continue to be monitored for investments and growth. If these challenges can be surmounted, electric vehicles (EVs) are the future.
Automakers are racing to adopt regulatory norms and transition to higher emission standards. The change in diesel pricing policy, rapid emission and safety norm transitions, bottlenecks in financing, and emergence of cab aggregators have continually thrown spanners in the works. Even as the industry is coming to terms with these, the future entails other pressures withthe pollution levels on the rise.
State and central governments will be pre-occupied with enhancing air quality over the next decade. Moreover, India’s large trade deficit in trading goods creates a case in point for the “Atma Nirbhar” initiative. Though focus on EVs could initially raise trade deficit because of EVs battery imports, the Phased Manufacturing Programme (PMP) has taken steps to reduce any resultant impact, by promoting indigenization of EVs.
The latest draft EV policy from the central government calls for 30% EVs sales by 2030. Multiple state-level policies announced by the governments of Delhi, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh are also proof of transition.
Within the automobile ecosystem, partners such as petrol pumps, automotive dealerships, and service stations could face declining viability. Business models of auto and auto-component players, as well as their growth prospects, may also be affected. Consequently, financial institutions and investors with exposure to the automotive value chain need to understand dynamics emerging in the EV segment, now more than ever.
