CRISIL Ratings webinar on organised brick-and-mortar retail: Recovering from the pandemic shock

Summary

Revenues of organised brick-and-mortar retailers were beaten down badly in the first half of the current fiscal, given the reduced footfalls due to Covid-19-induced lockdowns and restrictions on store operations. Footfalls have improved from the second half onwards, riding on lockdown relaxations, festivities and improved discretionary spending.

Going forward, the speed of recovery is expected to vary across the segments such as food & grocery, apparel, and consumer durables and electronics retail.

Next fiscal, revenue growth is expected to be in healthy double digits, driven by low-base effect and broad-based demand revival owing to improved consumer spending - assuming the impact of the pandemic wanes.

Profitability of retailers too, which was impacted in fiscal 2021, is expected to gradually recover, supported by better coverage of costs in the coming fiscal.

What does that mean for brick and mortar retail's performance? Which product segments will do better than the others? Will store additions and geographical expansion plans revive?

The webinar will have a presentation by CRISIL's experts, a panel discussion with senior industry leaders and a Q&A session, covering the following:

  • Impact of the pandemic on revenues in fiscal 2021, and growth prospects for fiscal 2022
  • Profitability drivers and outlook on store expansion
  • Consolidation activity and alliances
  • Credit outlook for the sector
