Steelmakers have lately witnessed a sharp improvement in profitability because of duty support from the government and healthy growth in production.
However, debt repayment capability remains under pressure because of sluggish domestic demand, significant underutilised domestic capacity and global oversupply.
The sector had outstanding debt amounting to Rs 319,500 crore as on Mar 2017, over a third of which has been classified as non-performing assets by banks.
In this context, questions emerge with respect to the timeline of an acceleration in domestic demand, the impact of potential consolidation and the resilience of different business models.
CRISIL Research is conducting a webinar to address these issues. It will cover:
Global demand-supply dynamics and raw material outlook
Domestic demand growth and supply dynamics
Sustenance of safeguard measures and its impact on profitability
Analysis of steel sub-segments to assess business potential and debt sustainability
