After a pronounced slump due to the pandemic in the first half, India's energy demand recovered in the second half of last fiscal in lockstep with improving economic activity, restricting the full-year decline to about 0.5% compared with fiscal 2020.
Additionally, power generation companies (gencos) got a huge liquidity breather through the Atma Nirbhar package offered by the government, a part of which was disbursed last fiscal, with the balance expected in the current one. While discoms have been able to partly clear their dues through this package, their operational parameters continues to remain under stress with high ACS-ARR gap and low collection efficiencies.
The second wave of infections has disrupted the demand-supply dynamics again, beating down power consumption and causing high-frequency macro indicators to weaken.
Against this background, CRISIL Ratings is conducting a webinar on the power sector, where its experts will delve into:
Trends in energy demand and outlook for this fiscal
Likely impact of the second wave on the energy demand and utilisation levels of gencos
Outlook on discom performance
Expectations on movement of receivables of gencos
Impact on liquidity and their credit profiles
Progress on FGD compliance
The webinar will be followed by a panel discussion involving industry experts and a Q&A session.
