Summary

Various measures of central and state governments in the power distribution sector haven’t been adequate enough to deliver the desired objectives of discom turnaround. Even more progressive amendments to the Electricity Act, 2003 including carriage and contents could not see the light of the day.

The challenges in the sector are complex and has been further compounded by varied policy implementation and disparate regulatory frameworks across states. Adding woes to worry, availability of credible data, which is a critical factor for successful & sustainable policy formulation, continues to be a problem.

Therefore, it is vital that the new government focusses on formulating policies that are sustainable, future-ready and one that proffers inclusive solutions to improve the sector’s landscape.
